Courses
We are mainly believers in one to one coaching, but sometimes courses are more effective, efficient and cost-effective, especially if groups have challenging scenarios or shared issues to work on. Contact us for more info on our courses.
A lot of misperceptions about individuals and groups come from speaking style and tone. For example, someone may be perceived as abrasive, and we find that they are likely to speak too directly, not know how to use transitions, Bridge Phrases™, lubricating language, or how to present an idea in a diplomatic way with a considerate tone of voice. Changes in voice and wording have a dramatic impact on how well you are understood, valued, or convincing.
No one ever tells you directly how to persuade them. But you can learn how to “read” people for their drives and constraints, address those, and be more influential and valued as a result. Many technical people are misunderstood not because they are unclear, but because they don’t systematically convince others or know how to make their technical or complex messages compelling. Individuals and groups should learn well-established and little known “persuaders” that are particular to senior executives, technical personnel, critical listeners, and readers.
3. BRIDGING THE GAP BETWEEN SPECIALISTS AND NON-SPECIALISTS
One of the most common issues we hear about is the difficulty that scientists, engineers, mathematicians, statisticians, information technologists, and other technical people have in communicating with less technical peers and top executives. Unique in this module is the concept of learning how to be more than an expert, but also being a leader, partner, and facilitator. Also, technical personnel learn how not to “dumb down” their work but make it exciting, persuasive, and accessible to non-specialists. They also learn how to manage questions for maximum persuasion and personal credibility-building, even with technical peers.
Whereas speakers and writers “know” that they should be clear, concise, and precise in wording, rarely, except for in this course, are the specific skills of clarity, conciseness, and word-finding studied, practiced, and mastered. With intensive exercises and practice, each participant will find their best strategies for getting their points across and ending a history of “blanking,” rambling, or vagueness.
International, regional, or local dialects, educational gaps, and problematic speech habits such as speaking too fast can be barriers to career success and lead to being not only misunderstood but also being under-estimated. Most people are surprised to learn that they can dramatically change long-held speech habits and open the doors to being understood AND valued.
6. HANDLING CHALLENGING SCENARIOS
We have identified dozens of scenarios that drive people crazy. An example is dealing with an individual who doesn’t do what he or she promised to do. In this practical course, we personalize the scenarios to each corporate workplace, then work with individuals or teams to quickly and practically make these inevitable scenarios work much better. This surprisingly entertaining and informative course yields rewards in productivity and workplace satisfaction, giving individuals and groups a sense of how they can control discourse in low confrontational ways and make lasting changes in their interactions. The results? Not just greater skill and comfort, but the recognition they deserve as contributors and leaders.
